Three days dedicated to scientific innovation on mangroves and coastlines in French Guiana
November 4-6 in Cayenne: an event for coastal research and mangrove conservation stakeholders
The MAGELLAN Living Lab and the ILICO network are joining forces to offer three days dedicated to innovative research strategies on mangroves, coastlines, and their biodiversity. These joint days will provide an opportunity to discover scientific and methodological advances in the study of coastal ecosystems.
A rich and diverse program
The event will begin with a review of the first year of the MAGELLAN Living Lab, a project that explores Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) applied to mangroves. This review will share the initial results on three major themes: coastal risk anticipation, biodiversity conservation, and the health of local populations dependent on these ecosystems.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend scientific presentations by leading figures from national coastal and shoreline observation networks. These presentations will offer an overview of current research and the challenges to be addressed in order to better understand and protect our coastlines.
Training and fieldwork: a practical approach
A practical component will enrich these days with training sessions dedicated to the use of satellite imagery and cutting-edge scientific equipment. These workshops will enable participants to acquire or perfect the technical skills essential for observing and monitoring coastal ecosystems.
The event will continue with field trips, including excursions to the mangroves of French Guiana. These immersive experiences will provide an opportunity to observe the richness of these ecosystems in situ and to compare theoretical approaches with the reality on the ground.
A scientific approach serving local communities
The MAGELLAN Living Lab structures its activities around key scientific questions: the legitimacy of mangroves as an SFN, the identification of key factors in the resilience of the Guiana ecosystem, the effectiveness of current management methods, the integration of protection costs into development plans, and the links between socio-ecosystem transformation and coastal health.
These events are aimed at researchers, natural area managers, local decision-makers, and all stakeholders involved in coastal preservation.
